C1  POPULATION, HOUSES, AND APARTMENTS

Population

The number of registered inhabitants in Prague has been growing since 2001 again (it was decreasing in the second half of the 1990s). This change was, however, made due to the fact that since 2001 foreigners with granted asylum and those foreigners, who are staying on the territory of the Czech Republic on the basis of visas for over 90 days longer than one year, have been taken into the number of the total population. Since 2004, in relation to the Czech Republic accession to the European Union, the foreigners having a long-term residence and temporary residence have also been taken into the number. The current number of inhabitants (as at 31 December 2008) in Prague is 1,249,026, which is by almost 7% more than in 2004.

The number of inhabitants is a result of spontaneous movements in the population (births and deaths) and of migration. In Prague, it is just migration having the highest effect on the number of inhabitants, mostly the migration of persons with foreign citizenship. Concerning the Czech Republic citizens these have been rather leaving the territory of Prague and most frequently move beyond the Prague limits to its surrounding back country. Since 1997 the decrease in the number of live births has been stopped and it has been slowly increasing, on the contrary. The highest number of births was in the latest year monitored – 2009 (14,488 live born children compared to 11,131 in 2004). The reason for is namely that families are settled by mothers now of higher age yet belonging to generations of the highly populated 1970s. Conversely, the number of deaths has been rather decreasing over the long-term; the average life expectancy has been prolonged.

The population age structure is also affected by natural movements and migration. The population ageing is caused especially by the shift of highly populated generations into the pension age. The largest increases in the population age structure proportion were in the years from 2004 to 2009 recorded in the age group 30–44 years of age (the strong generations of the 1970s and the inflow of foreigners seeking work). The second highest increase was recorded in the age group 60–74 years of age (due to the population ageing) which is also related to the decrease in the age group 45–59 years of age.

The total number of marriages has been slightly decreasing since the 1970s; the number of divorces is rather stable having a moderate tendency to drop. Out of the number of live births the ever growing portion of children has been born out of marriage (it counted for 34% in 2009).

Further detailed information is published on regular basis on the pages www.czso.cz or www.praha.czso.cz, respectively (Czech Statistical Office, Regional Workplace for the Capital City of Prague).
